Silver Winter: 25 Year Anniversary Retracing of Our First Month Long Snowshoe Trip in the Maine Woods
talk by Garrett Conover
This is a chronicle of two month-long snowshoe trips from Greenville to Allagash Village, twenty–five years apart. The second, 2005 trip provided a fresh look at the Maine woods surrounding Moosehead Lake, the West and North Branches of the Penobscot, and the St. John River; a month long snowshoe and toboggan celebration of several conservation success stories; human powered traditional travel; and the beauty of the wilds in winter. .At PMM’s Stephen Phillips Memorial Library, Church Street, Searsport. Tickets in advance $10 non-members, $8 members, or at the door $15 non-members, $12 members.
Garrett & Alexandra Conover radiate an inspirational connectedness to the landscapes and northern people whose skills they have been studying and practicing for more than thirty years. Yankee Magazine listed them amongst “Sixty People Who Make New England New England” and in 1999 Outside Magazine profiled them (with five others) as “20th Century Heroes for a New Millennium”.
When & Where
Penobscot Marine Museum
Penobscot Marine Museum has the feel of a 19th Maine village. Our lovely campus of ten buildings is in the charming town of Searsport on Penobscot Bay. Our ship captain’s house is beautifully furnished with antiques from around the world. Another ship captain’s house displays our extensive collection of 19th century marine paintings, scrimshaw, ship models, and China Trade objects. We have three 19th century barns displaying over fifty classic small water craft including lobster boats, dories, and canoes. Two buildings are filled with hands-on maritime activities for kids. Outside on our green you can raise and lower a ship’s mast!
Check our website www.penobscotmarinemuseum.org for exhibit, lectures and workshops through the year. The PMM campus is open from late May through late October, but our Gallery has special exhibits, lectures and workshops throughout the winter and spring, and our Museum Store and Framer remain open Thursday through Saturday.
